EXPERIENCE
My sailing experience is extensive. I completed a 5-year circumnavigation of the world by age 12 on our family schooner and have been continuously involved in the marine industry since then. I have captained countless vessels starting at age 19 on all oceans, from commercial vessels to gaff rigged schooners to superyachts.
My strengths include working well under pressure, reacting calmly and concisely in emergency situations, and providing a courteous, competent, and happy crew devoid of drama while maintaining the yacht and her equipment to the highest possible standards. I am a hands-on captain with a very high level of technical skill in all aspects of superyacht engineering, management, and maintenance. My leadership style is to lead by example to create a courteous, supportive environment. Furthermore, I never lose sight of the yacht's primary objective, which is to ensure that the owners and their guests get the maximum enjoyment out of their yacht.
EMPLOYMENT
Captain S/Y Varsovie
Jan 2009 to Dec 2021
Hired as build consultant on the boat, I took over as captain shortly after she was launched. We subsequently logged over 150,000 miles in the 12 year period, crossing the Atlantic 23 times, cruising the Baltic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean seas. In addition to extended cruising, I organized over 3 dozen regattas with Varsovie, including multiple St. Barth's Buckets, Le Voile de St Tropez, Rolex Swan Regatta, and Royal Squadron Centennial Regatta.
Captain Various Sail & Power
Nov 1974 to Dec 2021
I have sailed professionally since 1974 on a wide range of vessels including Zolana, America, Virgin de la Rosa, Silver Bullet, Sea Antelope, Fairweather, Varuna, Northern Lights, High Risk, Sea Dancer, Rouge Wave, Cristobal, Three Cheers, Kalevala, Syncronicity, and Varsovie. During this time, navigation procedures developed from pure celestial and RDF to Loran, Omega, and finally GPS with chart plotters and ECDIS. I embrace the modern systems while maintaining proficiency with the sextant.
President SeaPortal Ltd.
Feb 2000 to Dec 2008 New build/Yacht Management
As president of Seaportal I organized a team of captains to provide new build management, yacht management, brokerage, and worldwide yacht deliveries.
Owner/operator Bay Riggers, Inc.
Jan 1986 to Dec 1999 Spar building, rigging, distribution
As founder and president of Bay Riggers, Inc. I built the company into one of the West Coast's premier rigging lofts, with distribution and technical licenses for most of the major marine manufacturers including Navtec rod and hydraulic systems, Harken, Ronstan, Yale, and Schaefer.
