Project Management – Owner’s Representative CONCEPT: Project management is a critical role in any new build. An analogy might be a conductor in an orchestra. While the orchestra may be composed of a group of fantastically talented musicians, they still need to play the same song at the same time to create pleasing music. On a successful new build, the architects, builders, designers, suppliers, department heads, engineers, and craftsmen must be in sync and tuned to the owner’s requirements. Like most successful endeavors, a yacht build is based on a solid plan. Priorities are listed, requirements are determined, and a conceptual plan is developed. A builder and designer are chosen who can best meet these goals, taking into consideration their experience with similar projects, work load, location, stability, exchange rate, and construction methods. During the build process, the project manager is in constant contact with the designer and builder, managing the thousands of decisions required in any quality build. He keeps the owner informed and up to date. He documents the construction, ensures quality control, and looks for areas where improvements can be made. As the yacht completes, the project manager assists with flagging and registering, insurance, certification, outfitting, and crewing.
