Having sailed seriously for almost his entire life, Patrick has encountered most of the complications that tend to occur on board ocean-going yachts. By the age of five he had sailed from Florida to San Francisco in his family’s schooner, from there embarking on a six year circumnavigation of the world. By the age of nine he was taking star sights and daily noon shots, among other sailing tasks. Having been schooled throughout these years in Tahiti, New Zealand, Greece and Kenya (and frequently on the bow of the boat), Patrick approaches problem-solving with the perspective and creativity this background engenders. Actively involved in all aspects of the marine industry for more than 40 years, his career has included owning and operating one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest rigging and chandlery companies, managing large-scale new marine construction projects, captaining many yachts with crews ranging from 4 to 24, racing multiple times in nearly all the world’s big boat regattas as captain, driver, bowman, mast man, or trimmer, and making numerous crossings of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
His extensive background in ocean racing includes numerous TransPacs, Pacific Cups, Mexican races, Clipper and Kenwood Cups, Big Boat Series, taking part in the Whitbread Around the World Race, and numerous Caribbean and European regattas. He has sailed with many of the most well known and experienced sailors in the world, and continues to race actively, participating now primarily in international maxi regattas as captain.
Patrick formed Seaportal Ltd. to combine the talents of a select group of highly experienced professional mariners who have obtained and continue to maintain a high level of technical and practical expertise in the marine industry. It is his strong belief that there is no substitute for experience, and that the more experience one has, the greater is one’s ability to react appropriately to the issues that arise. This group has deep yachting experience, and consists of passionate mariners who never lose sight of the big picture of why we go yachting, while constantly attending to the details which contribute to a successful, truly satisfying operation.
